This project began as a modest brief from a young family of three seeking to adapt their home for a growing family. Working within a tight budget and a very small footprint, the design prioritised spatial efficiency, flexibility, and quality of light.
The primary objective was to create more generous living and kitchen spaces while introducing an additional bedroom and bathroom. Achieving this required the addition of a second storey—an inherently complex move, as the dwelling is one of four originally single-storey units. The proposal demanded careful coordination with strata, neighbouring owners, and a detailed understanding of the governing legislation.
Rather than maximising floor area, the design consciously favoured quality of space. Internally, the removal of walls to the original main bedroom allowed the living area to expand into a generous, flexible family space. The existing oversized bathroom was refined into a more efficient galley layout, enabling the kitchen to grow in both amenity and functionality. The stair was designed to work hard, integrating storage and a television unit to minimise wasted space.
Upstairs, the floor area was deliberately reduced to introduce a small void, prioritising light, volume, and spatial generosity over sheer size. The upper level accommodates two bedrooms and a compact but fully serviced bathroom, creating a calm and efficient retreat.
All external doors and windows were replaced with recycled timber, chosen for both performance and material character.
This project is also the architect’s own home—a house of experimentation, constraint, and care. Designed and built for my wife, son, and myself, it is a labour of love that demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform even the most limited conditions into a dynamic, functional, and enduring family home.
